The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday named the squads for the upcoming one-off Test and three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, with several key changes aimed at managing workloads and building squad depth.

Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been rested as part of the team’s rotation policy, while KL Rahul has been elevated to vice-captain for the Test match in place of Rishabh Pant. Shubman Gill will lead the side in both formats.

Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya remain subject to fitness clearance. Major Changes and New Faces. The selectors have made significant changes following India’s 2-0 home Test series defeat to South Africa in November 2025. Notably absent from the Test squad are Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep. In a positive development, left-arm spinning all-rounder Manav Suthar and left-arm pacer Gurnoor Brar have earned their maiden call-ups to the Test side. Another left-arm spinner, Harsh Dubey, has also been included as India continues to strengthen its bowling resources across formats. Series Schedule

  • One-off Test: June 6–10, 2026, at New Chandigarh
  • 1st ODI: June 14, 2026, at Dharamsala
  • 2nd ODI: June 17, 2026, at Lucknow
  • 3rd ODI: June 20, 2026, at Chennai

This will be India’s first Test assignment since the disappointing loss to South Africa. The team will be keen to return to winning ways against a familiar opponent. Historical Context: India and Afghanistan have met only once in Test cricket. In their 2018 encounter in Bengaluru, India crushed the visitors by an innings and 262 runs inside two days, underlining their dominance in the format on home soil. The upcoming series offers Afghanistan a rare chance to challenge India at home while giving the hosts an opportunity to test bench strength ahead of a packed international calendar.
