India’s ambitious high-speed rail dream moved a step closer to reality after the first look of the country’s proposed bullet train for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor was officially unveiled at the Ministry of Railways in New Delhi.

The sleek image of the futuristic train has been displayed at Gate Number 4 of the ministry building, offering the public a glimpse of what could soon become India’s fastest rail service.

India’s First Bullet Train Design Unveiled

The proposed bullet train features a modern aerodynamic design inspired by globally renowned high-speed rail systems. The unveiling has generated excitement as India accelerates work on its first-ever high-speed rail corridor connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

The ambitious infrastructure project is being developed by National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited under the supervision of the Ministry of Railways.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Route Details

The high-speed rail corridor will span 508 kilometres and connect 12 major stations across Maharashtra and Gujarat, including:

  • Bandra Kurla Complex
  • Thane
  • Virar
  • Boisar
  • Vapi
  • Bilimora
  • Surat
  • Bharuch
  • Vadodara
  • Anand/Nadiad
  • Ahmedabad
  • Sabarmati

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the mega project in 2017 at Sabarmati.

India’s First Undersea Rail Tunnel Taking Shape

One of the most talked-about features of the bullet train corridor is India’s first undersea rail tunnel beneath Thane Creek.

The project includes eight mountain tunnels, with seven located in Maharashtra and one in Gujarat. Authorities recently confirmed that India’s largest cutterhead for a tunnel boring machine (TBM) has been installed at Vikhroli in Mumbai.

The massive cutterhead measures 13.6 metres in diameter and weighs around 350 tonnes. It will help excavate a 21-kilometre underground tunnel section, including a 7-kilometre undersea stretch beneath Thane Creek.

Officials said two giant TBMs weighing over 3,000 tonnes each are currently being assembled for the project.

When Will India’s Bullet Train Start Running?

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw earlier announced that the first operational section between Ahmedabad and Vapi is expected to begin service by August 2027.

The full Ahmedabad-Mumbai corridor is targeted for completion by 2029.

Once operational, the bullet train is expected to complete the 508-kilometre journey in just 1 hour and 58 minutes, drastically reducing travel time between the two major business hubs.

Major Boost for India’s Infrastructure Push

The ₹1.1 lakh crore bullet train project is considered one of India’s biggest transportation infrastructure initiatives. Experts believe the corridor will transform intercity connectivity, boost economic activity, create jobs, and modernise India’s railway ecosystem.

With construction progressing rapidly and the first train design now unveiled publicly, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is increasingly becoming a symbol of India’s next-generation transport ambitions.
