The attack on students at Gunupur Anwesha hostel and allegations of poor food quality and harassment in residential schools have sparked a heated political debate in the Odisha Assembly.

The opposition has accused the government of neglecting tribal students, while the ruling party has defended its actions.

BJD MLA Ranendra Pratap Swain criticized the BJP government, highlighting its failure to address issues in residential schools despite being in power for nine months. He pointed out that similar concerns were raised by BJP leaders when they were in opposition. Swain demanded long-term solutions, citing incidents of harassment and neglect in hostels.

In response, Scheduled Tribes and Castes Minister Nityananda Gond refuted the allegations, stating that immediate action had been taken. He accused the opposition of exaggerating the situation and emphasized measures such as increased mid-day meal allowances, health check-ups, and improved hostel infrastructure.

The debate also saw BJP MLAs defending the government, claiming significant steps had been taken for the welfare of tribal students. They accused the opposition of attempting to tarnish the government’s image.

The issue has drawn attention to the state of residential schools in Odisha, with both parties trading blame while tribal students continue to face challenges.

BJP MLA Irasis Acharya criticized the BJD for harassment of female students in residential schools during its governance, highlighting incidents in the Gunupur Anwesha hostel and complaints of poor food quality in Mayurbhanj. He accused the opposition of attempting to defame the government. Other BJP MLAs echoed his sentiments, asserting that the new government is committed to tribal development and protection.

Scheduled Castes and Tribes Minister Nityananda Gond responded, noting that TAC meetings had not been held for 5 years. He mentioned an increase in sexual abuse cases over recent years but highlighted a decline since the current government took charge. Initiatives like increased mid-day meal allowances, health check-ups, and new hostel constructions were announced. Plans include building 426 additional hostels, installing CCTV in all hostels, and creating 1000 warden posts. Gond emphasized the prior BJD government’s neglect towards tribal welfare and claimed the BJP government is taking significant steps to improve conditions.
