Severe Nor’wester storms lashed several parts of Odisha, causing widespread damage to houses, public infrastructure, and essential services.

The sudden weather event, marked by strong winds and heavy rain, disrupted normal life in multiple districts, leaving residents struggling to cope with the aftermath.

Bhadrak Village Worst Hit, Houses Damaged

The impact was particularly severe in Chandapur village under Mahulia panchayat in Chandbali block of Bhadrak district. A large coconut tree was uprooted during the storm and crashed onto residential houses, damaging structures and destroying boundary walls. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, though families narrowly escaped harm.

Power Disruptions and Road Blockages Reported

In Pallahara and nearby areas, the storm uprooted several large trees, blocking roads and severely affecting transportation. Power supply was also disrupted as electric poles and wires were snapped by the intense winds. Restoration efforts are currently underway, but normalcy has yet to return in many affected regions.

Public Events and Rural Homes Bear the Brunt

Public spaces and local events were also significantly affected. At the Chandan Yatra ground in Khamar, temporary structures including stalls, tents, and an opera stage were blown away. In rural areas, several homes with thatched or asbestos roofs suffered extensive damage, while reports also indicated the loss of livestock.

Residents Recall Close Escapes, Seek Government Aid

Residents described the Nor’wester as sudden and destructive. Many families rushed out of their homes as trees collapsed nearby, narrowly avoiding tragedy. Affected individuals have appealed to the government for immediate assistance, stating that their homes are no longer safe for living.

Need for Disaster Preparedness Highlighted

The recurring impact of Nor’wester storms has once again highlighted the vulnerability of rural infrastructure and the urgent need for disaster preparedness, resilient housing, and improved emergency response systems in storm-prone regions of Odisha.
