Odisha has taken a major step toward clean mobility by proposing 190 Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations across six cities under the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme.

The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2070.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) and the Commerce & Transport Department of Odisha are jointly driving the project. The scheme, notified in September 2024 with an outlay of ₹10,900 crore, allocates ₹2,000 crore for developing EV Public Charging Stations nationwide.

The State Transport Authority submitted the proposal to MHI for installing charging stations in Angul, Balasore, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Kalinganagar, and Puri. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) will serve as the Project Implementation Agency. Officials, including MHI Director Amrendra Kishore Singh and BHEL General Manager J.K. Pattanaik, will conduct site surveys before final approvals.

A meeting held in Bhubaneswar discussed the plan with Principal Secretary NBS Rajput and Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur. The project aims to expand EV infrastructure, reduce range anxiety, and promote sustainable transport across Odisha.

Once implemented, the initiative will enhance accessibility for EV users and support India’s broader goal of building a nationwide EV ecosystem. Odisha’s proactive participation underscores its commitment to green mobility and the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
