In a high-powered 4th review meeting today, Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg directed all departments and agencies to complete every aspect of preparations for the Puri Rath Yatra 2026 well ahead of schedule, ensuring the grand chariot festival unfolds without a hitch.

The meeting reviewed the implementation of decisions taken in previous sessions and charted the roadmap for the remaining weeks. Senior officials including Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Hemant Sharma, Shree Jagannath Temple Chief Administrator Dr. Arvind Kumar Padhi, Law Department Principal Secretary Dr. Pavitra Mohan Samal, Puri District Collector Divyajyoti Parida, and SP Puri Prateek Singh were present.

Focus on Smooth Chariot Pulling and Reduced Chaos

A major highlight was the discussion on making the sacred *rath tana* (chariot pulling) smoother and more organised. Officials noted that an excessive number of cordon passes has been causing congestion. The meeting decided to significantly reduce the number of passes issued this year to ensure devotees and servitors can pull the massive chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra without hindrance.

Chariot Construction Racing Ahead

Temple Chief Administrator Dr. Padhee informed the gathering that chariot construction began on Akshaya Tritiya (April 20) and is progressing smoothly under the watchful eye of a dedicated technical committee. Out of the 865 wooden logs required, 576 have already been procured, with the rest arriving on time. The Chief Secretary emphasised continuous monitoring and issued strict instructions to ensure the chariot ropes are exceptionally strong and reliable.

Infrastructure Boom for Devotees and City

Several key projects are reaching the finishing line:

  • Construction of the Jagannath Ballav pilgrim centre, Acharya Harihar Chowk redevelopment, and multi-level parking at Digabarani and Yatrika Parking-1 is in the final stage.
  • Renovation and modernisation of Shree Gundicha Temple will be completed before the festival.
  • 50 high-mast lights will illuminate Bada Danda (Grand Avenue) like never before.
  • Six bio-toilet blocks (18 units) will come up along Puri’s sea beach, plus 1,600 temporary toilets across police camps, parking zones, and public areas.
  • 23 high-capacity pump stations have been identified for rapid water drainage during heavy rains.
  • Encroachment removal on Bada Danda will be completed by May end.
  • 21 new parking lots identified by Puri Municipality.
  • Eight temporary 10-bed hospitals will ease pressure on the main district hospital and TB & ID Hospital.
  • The Matia Pada – Puri-Konark Road overbridge is in the final phase and will be operational before the yatra, greatly improving traffic flow.

Crowd Management, Security & Pilgrim Comfort

Detailed deliberations were held on traffic management, CCTV surveillance (both permanent and temporary), emergency response systems, road repairs, sanitation, and large-scale police deployment. To ease rail travel, the Railways will set up eight additional ticket counters.

In a people-friendly move, free cooked food distribution by various organisations — often a cause of crowding and litter on Bada Danda — will now be restricted to designated spots only, keeping the Grand Avenue clean and the chariot procession smooth.

Chief Secy Garg reiterated that every single preparation must be completed well in advance so that lakhs of devotees can experience the divine journey of the Lords in a safe, organised, and spiritually uplifting atmosphere.

The world-famous Puri Rath Yatra 2026 is all set to be one of the most meticulously planned editions yet — a true celebration of devotion, tradition, and efficient governance.
