JD Vance has praised his Indian-origin in-laws, saying they have “enriched” the United States, while also raising concerns about misuse of the H-1B visa programme.

Speaking at a public event, he highlighted the positive contributions of immigrants alongside the need for reforms.

Personal Note on Indian Roots

JD Vance is married to Usha Vance, whose family traces its roots to Andhra Pradesh, India.

Referring to his in-laws, he said:

“They are great people and have been great contributors to the United States.”

His remarks underscored the role of Indian-origin families in shaping American society.

Concerns Over H-1B Visa Misuse

While appreciating immigrants, JD Vance also pointed out:

  • There is “a lot of fraud” in the H-1B visa system
  • Reforms are needed to ensure fairness
  • The system should benefit genuine skilled workers

The H-1B visa is widely used by US companies to hire foreign professionals, especially from India.

Message on American Identity

Vance emphasised that once individuals become US citizens, they should:

  • Prioritise American national interests
  • Identify themselves as part of the country
  • Contribute to its growth and development

He shared a personal anecdote about his father-in-law to illustrate this perspective.

Changes Under Trump Administration

Under Donald Trump, the H-1B visa system has undergone major changes:

  • Introduction of a $100,000 fee on certain visa categories
  • Preference for higher-paid roles
  • Proposed increase in minimum salary thresholds

These measures aim to protect domestic jobs and ensure better wages.

Impact on Indian Professionals

Indian professionals form a significant portion of H-1B visa holders, especially in sectors like:

  • Technology
  • Healthcare
  • Engineering

The new rules may impact hiring trends and opportunities for skilled workers.
