The Odisha government has announced that the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project will be extended to Cuttack, enhancing regional connectivity.

Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra emphasized the project’s importance, stating that limiting the metro service to Trisulia would not suffice, and extending it to Cuttack is essential for maximizing its utility.

A high-level technical committee is currently reviewing the project’s feasibility, with plans to prepare a new Detailed Project Report (DPR) to reflect the extended route. Preliminary work on the elevated corridor has commenced, and the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is actively working on the metro depot at Phulapokhari. The state government has allocated approximately ₹304 crore for this initiative.

The project’s first phase aims to establish a 30 km metro trunk route from Trisulia in Cuttack to Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, featuring 20 elevated stations. The infrastructure is targeted for completion by December 2027, with an estimated budget of ₹6,255.94 crore.

The extension to Cuttack is anticipated to significantly boost urban mobility and economic growth in the region, aligning with the state’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
