As Holi festivities unfold across the state, Odisha is bracing for a severe heatwave, with temperatures already surpassing 40°C in several regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of Yellow and Orange Warnings for multiple districts, urging residents to take necessary precautions against the sweltering conditions.

Rising Temperatures

By mid-March, Odisha had been grappling with soaring temperatures, significantly impacting both coastal and inland areas. The western parts of the state, known for their intense summer heat, are expected to bear the brunt of the heatwave.

IMD Warnings

The Regional Meteorological Center has issued the following heatwave alerts until March 16:

  • March 13: Yellow Warning for Balangir, Boudh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and other interior districts.
  • March 14: Yellow Warning remains for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Boudh, Balangir, and Angul.
  • March 15: Orange Warning for Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Boudh, and Balangir.
  • March 16: Orange Warning continues for Jharsuguda and Sambalpur.

Peak Heat

The impact of the ongoing heatwave is evident, with Boudh recording the highest temperature at 40.5°C. At least 12 other cities have seen temperatures soar above 38°C, with no immediate relief in sight. Authorities are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and protect themselves against heat-related illnesses.

Stay tuned for further updates as the situation unfolds.

Stay safe and hydrated! 🌞
