India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has announced a major leadership change after CEO Pieter Elbers stepped down from his position.

The airline’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, confirmed that co-founder and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will temporarily oversee the airline’s operations.

The resignation follows the airline’s most severe operational crisis in December 2025, which led to thousands of flight cancellations and delays.

Pieter Elbers Steps Down as CEO

In his resignation letter, Elbers cited personal reasons for stepping down from the top role and requested that his notice period be waived.

Elbers joined IndiGo as CEO in September 2022. During his tenure, the airline achieved several milestones, including rapid fleet expansion and strong revenue growth.

He described his time at the airline as both an honor and a privilege, highlighting the company’s growth and collaborative achievements over the past three years.

Major Achievements During His Leadership

Under Elbers’ leadership, IndiGo experienced significant expansion in the global aviation market.

Key developments included:

  • Crossing $10 billion in annual revenue

  • Expanding the airline’s fleet to more than 440 aircraft

  • Placing a historic order for 500 Airbus A320 family planes with Airbus

These moves strengthened IndiGo’s position as one of the fastest-growing airlines in the world.

December 2025 Flight Crisis

Despite its expansion, the airline faced a serious operational crisis in December 2025.

The disruption occurred while implementing new regulations designed to reduce pilot fatigue. The transition caused widespread scheduling issues.

Between December 3 and December 5, 2025, the airline:

  • Cancelled over 2,500 flights

  • Delayed nearly 1,900 flights

  • Affected more than 300,000 passengers

Following the incident, India’s aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation imposed a record fine of ₹22.20 crore and issued a show-cause notice to the CEO.

The crisis significantly affected IndiGo’s reputation for operational reliability and punctuality.

Rahul Bhatia Returns to Lead Airline

After Elbers’ resignation, co-founder Rahul Bhatia has taken interim responsibility for the airline’s management.

Bhatia said he feels a deep sense of responsibility toward the airline’s employees, customers, and stakeholders.

He emphasized that IndiGo will continue focusing on:

  • Operational reliability

  • Service excellence

  • Long-term growth in India’s aviation market

Bhatia has been closely involved with the airline since its founding more than two decades ago.

Market Reaction

Despite the leadership change, investor confidence remained stable.

Shares of InterGlobe Aviation rose 3.46% to ₹4,382.45 on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Meanwhile, the broader market benchmark BSE Sensex also closed higher during the trading session.

Conclusion

The resignation of Pieter Elbers marks a significant leadership shift for IndiGo at a time when the airline is recovering from a major operational crisis.

With Rahul Bhatia taking interim control, the company is expected to focus on restoring operational stability while continuing its rapid expansion in the aviation sector.

Industry observers will be closely watching how the airline navigates its next phase of growth.
