The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended an invitation to Party Presidents and senior leaders of all National and State political parties for an interaction aimed at further strengthening electoral processes within the legal framework.

The Commission has requested suggestions from political parties by April 30, 2025, for any unresolved issues at the level of Electoral Registration Officers (ERO), District Election Officers (DEO), or Chief Electoral Officers (CEO).

In an individual letter issued to political parties today, the ECI envisaged an interaction with Party Presidents and senior members at a mutually convenient time to enhance electoral processes in accordance with established laws.

During an ECI conference last week, Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar instructed CEOs, DEOs, and EROs of all States and Union Territories to hold regular interactions with political parties. He emphasized resolving any suggestions received in such meetings strictly within the existing legal framework and submitting an action taken report to the Commission by March 31, 2025. The Commission also urged political parties to proactively use this mechanism of decentralized engagement.

Political parties are one of the key stakeholders among 28 stakeholders identified by the Commission as per the Constitution and statutory framework covering all aspects of electoral processes. The Commission’s letter to political parties highlighted that the Representation of the People Act 1950 & 1951, Registration of Electors Rules 1960, Conduct of Election Rules 1961, orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, and various instructions, manuals, and handbooks issued by the ECI have established a decentralized, robust, and transparent legal framework for holding free and fair elections.
