A tragic accident occurred in Balasore district’s Soro area when a pilgrim bus travelling from West Bengal to Andhra Pradesh crashed on NH-16, killing the driver and leaving 14 passengers critically injured.

The mishap took place near Bahanaga Bazaar on a bridge under Khantapada police limits. The bus carried over 50 pilgrims when the driver reportedly dozed off, lost control, and the vehicle veered onto the bridge before plunging downward.

The bus dangled precariously on the bridge, creating panic among passengers. Rescue teams from police and fire services rushed to the site and evacuated the trapped pilgrims. Fourteen severely injured passengers were admitted to a nearby medical college and hospital, with several in serious condition.

Authorities confirmed that the driver died on the spot. Other passengers escaped with minor injuries or were safely rescued. Police have begun investigating the cause, focusing on driver fatigue during long-distance travel.

Officials advised that drivers on extended journeys must take adequate rest to prevent such tragedies. The administration assured full support to the injured, including medical care and assistance.

Local residents highlighted the recurring accidents on NH-16 and stressed the urgent need for stricter road safety measures and vigilance in passenger transport.
