A Class IX student of Chintamani Government School in Kishannagar, Cuttack district, was hospitalised after his teacher allegedly forced him to perform 100 sit-ups as punishment for absence.

The boy, identified as the son of Abhiram Pani from Praharajpur, had missed classes in January. When he returned on February 2, his teacher reportedly ordered him to complete 100 sit-ups in the classroom. Later that night, his knees swelled, he experienced severe pain, and blisters developed on his legs.

Family members initially tried home medication, but his condition worsened. Pani approached the school headmistress with a complaint, but he claimed the matter was not taken seriously. Two days ago, the teacher visited the boy’s home to check on his health, but left without further action.

On Wednesday, the family admitted the student to a private hospital in Cuttack. Doctors advised shifting him to SCB Medical College and Hospital for proper treatment. He is currently undergoing care there. According to his father, doctors diagnosed a rare medical condition triggered by excessive physical strain.

Reports suggest that five to six other students were also punished with sit-ups on the same day. Parents have since raised objections with the school authorities. Police confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway.
