Star batter Abhishek Sharma remains under medical observation in New Delhi ahead of India’s Group A T20 World Cup 2026 match against Namibia on February 12.
He has been admitted to a private hospital due to a stomach infection, raising doubts about his participation in the crucial fixture.
A source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed that doctors are conducting important tests to assess his condition. The team management is uncertain whether Abhishek will be discharged in time to play against Namibia.
Abhishek attended a team dinner at head coach Gautam Gambhir’s residence on February 8 but left early due to illness. Since then, his health has required close monitoring. While the infection is not considered extremely serious, medical staff advised rest to ensure full recovery before India’s high-voltage clash against Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo.
Abhishek’s absence could impact India’s batting strength against Namibia. However, the team hopes he will regain fitness for the Pakistan encounter. His record against Pakistan in T20Is adds to the anticipation. During the 2025 Asia Cup, he scored 110 runs in three innings at an average of 36.66 and a strike rate of 189.65, earning the Player of the Tournament award.
