Odisha’s renewable energy initiatives have taken a significant leap forward as Deputy Chief Minister Shri Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo held a review meeting on the development of a 1000 MW Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in Sunki, Koraput district.

This project, a collaboration with Telangana’s Sangamam Power Project Company, is set to generate electricity during peak hours using reverse turbines.

The MoU for this groundbreaking project was signed at the recent Utkarsha Odisha Conclave 2025, reaffirming Odisha’s commitment to green energy. Of 45 potential locations identified for PSP projects across the state, 10 are planned to be implemented by various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) at the government level.

During the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Singhdeo emphasized the importance of utilizing Odisha’s rich natural resources for renewable energy development. Inspired by the Prime Minister’s advice on clean fuel and green energy, Shri Singhdeo highlighted the state’s dedication to producing and utilizing green energy.

Sangamam Power Project Company has prepared a detailed project report for the Sunki PSP, which aims to generate 1000 MW of electricity for six hours daily during peak times. The company has requested single window clearance and other incentives from the Odisha Government to expedite the project’s implementation.

Key officials, including Development Commissioner Mrs. Anu Garg, Additional Chief Secretary, Industries Shri Hemant Sharma, Principal Secretary, Energy Department Shri Vishal Kumar Dev, Managing Director, IDCO Shri Bhupendra Singh Poonia, and Director, Sangamam Power Shri Deepak Mathur, attended the review meeting. Their presence underscores the importance of this renewable energy initiative for the future of Odisha.
