A consumer court in Sambalpur has penalised Amazon after a customer alleged he received a marble slab instead of the laptop he ordered.
Dr Choubarga Nayak had prepaid for a laptop on February 4 last year. The package arrived on February 12, but instead of the laptop, the box contained marble. Nayak lodged a complaint with Amazon’s helpline, but the company claimed it had delivered the correct parcel.
Unable to resolve the issue, Nayak approached the Sambalpur consumer court. After examining the case, the court ruled in his favour and ordered Amazon to compensate him.
The judgment directed the company to pay:
- Rs 60,799 for the cost of the laptop
- Rs 25,000 as compensation
- Rs 5,000 towards litigation expenses
The court instructed Amazon to pay the total amount within 30 days. Advocate Pritish Debata represented the complainant.
The ruling highlights growing accountability for e-commerce platforms in India, where consumer complaints over defective or missing products have been rising.
