Lok Sabha Speaker no‑confidence motion

The standoff in the Lok Sabha intensified on Tuesday as the Congress party formally submitted a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla during the ongoing Budget Session.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said the notice was submitted at 1.14 pm under Rule 94C of the Rules and Procedures of the Lok Sabha. He explained that the opposition was compelled to take this step after repeated complaints about the conduct of House proceedings.

According to Gogoi, the motion carries the signatures of 119 MPs, reflecting broad opposition support. Congress leaders alleged bias, denial of speaking time, and disruptions during the session as reasons for the move.

The decision followed incidents where Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders were not allowed to speak on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address, coupled with the suspension of eight MPs.

Earlier, BJP women MPs had written to Speaker Birla seeking strict action against opposition members over the February 4 ruckus, accusing them of entering the well, climbing the Speaker’s table, and disrupting proceedings.

The Lok Sabha has remained in disarray since February 2, when Gandhi was denied the opportunity to speak a day after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget. Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha has already begun discussions on the Union Budget 2026–27.

The no-confidence motion marks a sharp escalation in the confrontation between the opposition and treasury benches, setting the stage for a heated debate in Parliament.
