The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a directive to the IPL Chairman and BCCI to curb the influence of tobacco and alcohol advertisements.

The Director General of Health Services, Mr. Atul Goel, has penned a letter to IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumaal, urging a comprehensive ban on all forms of tobacco and alcohol advertising, including surrogate ads, during the upcoming 2025 IPL season. The request extends to prohibiting the promotion of these products at all affiliated events and sports facilities.

Highlighting India’s substantial burden of non-communicable diseases, Mr. Goel emphasized the critical need for the IPL to implement these stringent regulations. The letter further calls for ensuring that sportspersons, including commentators, refrain from endorsing alcohol or tobacco products.

The Health Ministry’s initiative is seen as a crucial step in promoting public health and safeguarding the well-being of the nation’s youth.
