A speeding car crashed through the barricade of Bhubaneswar’s Shishu Bhavan overbridge early Monday and plunged onto a house below, sparking panic among residents.
The accident occurred around 5:30 am when the vehicle lost control, rammed into the roadside barricade, and fell from a considerable height. After hitting a tree beneath the flyover, the car landed on the roof of a nearby asbestos house in the Kedarapalli slum. The impact damaged the car and broke nearly a 10-foot stretch of the barricade.
The driver survived the crash, rescued from the mangled vehicle with injuries minimised by airbags. Police confirmed no fatalities. However, several residents sustained minor injuries when bricks fell during the collision. A youth suffered head injuries, while a woman was struck by falling debris.
Residents described terrifying moments as the car landed on their homes. One family narrowly escaped when bricks struck a relative carrying a child. Another household had its doorway blocked, trapping an elderly paralysed woman inside.
Police reached the spot quickly and began investigating. Preliminary findings suggest the driver was intoxicated. Authorities detained him and launched a probe into reckless driving. Traffic movement was disrupted briefly but restored later.
