Miscreants attempted to abduct a student of Vikram Dev University in Jeypore on Thursday afternoon.
The victim, identified as Moukit Acharya, a third-year Commerce student, managed to resist the attackers and escape, though he sustained serious injuries in the process.
The incident occurred around 4.30 pm near the university campus. Reports said a youth approached Moukit and requested a lift on his motorcycle, claiming he needed to reach Parabeda Chhak urgently. After being dropped there, the youth insisted on travelling further and diverted the route multiple times, eventually heading towards Gadapadar Canal Chhak. Moukit grew suspicious and asked the youth to get off the bike, but the accused refused.
Near SV Garden, the youth allegedly grabbed Moukit by the neck, forcing him to continue riding. The bike lost balance and crashed into a drain near Kalyan Mandap. Following the accident, the assailant assaulted Moukit and snatched his mobile phone. Despite his injuries, Moukit chased the attacker, but the miscreant escaped with the help of an accomplice waiting nearby on a scooter.
Local residents rushed to the spot after hearing the commotion. Moukit’s family informed Town police, who reached the scene promptly. He was admitted to a private hospital for treatment. Family members alleged that the kidnappers had been following Moukit for the past two days, attempting to abduct him under different pretexts.
Police confirmed that Moukit managed to photograph the scooter used by the miscreants while they fled. Investigators believe this evidence will help trace the accused.
