A government-operated Ama Bus collided with a bike on the busy Janpath road in Bhubaneswar on Friday afternoon, sparking chaos and public anger.
Following the accident, agitated locals vandalised the bus, shattering its windows and damaging parts of the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus was speeding when it hit the bike from behind, causing the rider to lose control and fall. The biker sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Capital Hospital for treatment. His identity and current condition remain unconfirmed.
The accident triggered immediate outrage among bystanders, who surrounded the bus and damaged it in protest. The incident led to a traffic jam on Janpath, with several vehicles stranded until police intervened. Officers from Kharavel Nagar police station reached the spot, pacified the crowd, and brought the situation under control. The bus driver was detained, while both the bus and the bike were seized for investigation.
This marks yet another accident involving the Ama Bus services in Odisha. Earlier the same day, a similar incident occurred in Puri. Locals allege that Ama Bus drivers often flout traffic rules and drive recklessly, endangering pedestrians and other commuters.
A witness stated, “The bus was speeding so fast that the biker had no time to react. People got angry and smashed the bus.”
Officials from Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT), which operates Ama Bus services, announced the formation of a committee to investigate the incident. They assured strict action against the driver and promised stronger training and safety measures for bus staff.
Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar’s traffic department has deployed additional police personnel on Janpath to manage congestion and prevent further accidents. The incident has reignited debate over road safety in Odisha, with citizens demanding stricter enforcement and accountability from transport authorities.
