The 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Commonwealth Countries was held at Samvidhan Sadan, New Delhi, bringing together parliamentary leaders from across the Commonwealth to deliberate on strengthening democratic institutions and legislative practices.
The conference was formally inaugurated and addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla presided over the proceedings. Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh delivered the welcome address. The event witnessed participation from representatives of 78 countries, including Speakers of State Legislatures, Union Ministers, and Members of Parliament.
Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker Ms Surama Padhy attended the conference and actively participated in the deliberations. She presented her considered views on measures adopted and proposed in Odisha to strengthen the functioning of the Legislative Assembly and deepen democratic values in the state.
The discussions focused on enhancing transparency, efficiency, and inclusiveness in legislative processes, with participating delegates sharing best practices from their respective regions.
The conference was also attended by Odisha Legislative Assembly Secretary Satyabrata Rout, who accompanied the Speaker.
