KKR’s Selection of Bangladeshi Cricketer Triggers Political Row; Congress and Dhirendra Shastri Defend Shah Rukh Khan

The selection of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has sparked a sharp political controversy, drawing strong reactions from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress.

KKR, an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise co-owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, announced Mustafizur Rahman’s inclusion in the squad amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh, particularly over reports of attacks on Hindus in the neighbouring country.

BJP Leader Labels Shah Rukh Khan ‘Traitor’

BJP leader and former Uttar Pradesh MLA Sangeet Som strongly criticised Shah Rukh Khan, calling him a “traitor” for backing the inclusion of a Bangladeshi player in the IPL team.

Referring to alleged persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh, Som accused the actor of investing in talent from a country he claimed was acting against India’s interests.

He further warned that Mustafizur Rahman would not be allowed to play in India “at any cost,” escalating the political rhetoric surrounding the issue.

Congress Condemns Remarks, Defends SRK

The Congress party condemned Som’s comments, calling them inflammatory and divisive. Party leaders argued that sports should not be politicised and stressed that the IPL is a professional league governed by established rules and international participation norms.

Congress leaders also criticised BJP figures for targeting Shah Rukh Khan personally, stating that such remarks undermine India’s inclusive and pluralistic values.

Dhirendra Shastri Voices Support

Spiritual leader Dhirendra Shastri also came out in support of Shah Rukh Khan, urging restraint and caution against mixing religion, nationality, and sports. He emphasised that cricket should remain a platform for talent and competition rather than political confrontation.

Player Selection Amid Diplomatic Sensitivities

Mustafizur Rahman, a well-known left-arm fast-medium bowler, has previously played in the IPL for multiple franchises and is regarded as one of Bangladesh’s most successful international cricketers.

While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not commented on the controversy, IPL rules allow teams to sign overseas players subject to government clearances and visa approvals.

The incident has once again highlighted the intersection of sports, politics, and diplomacy, with reactions continuing to pour in from across the political spectrum.
