Bhubaneswar is gearing up for the historic Khandagiri Magh Mela, which will take place from January 23 to February 1 near the ancient Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves.

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Odisha Culture Department are organising the festival, making it one of the state’s largest religious and cultural gatherings.

Security and Safety Measures

To strengthen safety, Mayor Sulochana Das chaired a preparation meeting where officials announced the installation of 100 CCTV cameras across the mela grounds. Moreover, the administration will deploy additional police forces to manage crowds and maintain law and order.

Facilities for Saints and Devotees

In addition, organisers are arranging accommodation, food, and sanitation facilities for more than 1,000 saints and monks expected from across India. Seven large pandals will host cultural performances and religious discourses. Furthermore, the mayor emphasised that no obscene dance or performance will be permitted, ensuring the sanctity of the event.

Cultural and Spiritual Significance

The mela will also honour 144 saints and distinguished personalities. It will feature five Mahayajnas aligned with Magh Purnima and Ravi-Pushya Yoga. Alongside, stalls for traders and temporary cottages for visiting saints will be set up. Organisers stressed that they will not encourage superstitious or unscientific practices.

Mythological Roots

According to Hindu mythology, Samba, son of Lord Krishna, cured himself of leprosy after worshipping the Sun God and meditating at Khandagiri and Udayagiri. Consequently, the mela commemorates this legend while promoting spirituality and cultural unity.

Attractions for Visitors

Visitors can enjoy spiritual discussions, folk music, and dance performances that showcase Odisha’s rich heritage. Additionally, the caves, which are significant Jain monuments, will attract tourists. Handicraft markets featuring applique work and pottery will promote local artisans. Evening hours between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. are expected to draw the largest crowds.

Special Highlights

This year’s mela coincides with the golden jubilee of the Vishva Sanatan Vaidik Dharma Parishad and the 5,126th year of Kaliyuga. As a highlight, organisers will release a special souvenir to mark the occasion.
