In a major crackdown on corruption, Odisha Vigilance officials have unearthed assets worth crores belonging to Niranjan Satapathy, a Forester in the Koraput Forest Division.

The ongoing searches, initiated on December 26, 2025, revealed a trove of immovable and movable properties far exceeding his known sources of income, raising questions about illicit gains during his 37-year tenure in government service.

The operation targeted six locations across Bhubaneswar, Jagatsinghpur, and Koraput districts, based on allegations of disproportionate assets. Satapathy, born on May 6, 1966, joined the forest department as a Forest Guard on January 22, 1988, with an initial monthly salary of Rs. 625. He was promoted to Forester in 2014 and has been stationed in Koraput ever since.

Vigilance teams, comprising six DSPs, seven Inspectors, and supporting staff, executed the raids under search warrants issued by the Hon’ble Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Bhubaneswar.

Among the key discoveries are two triple-storeyed palatial buildings in Jharpada, Bhubaneswar, each spanning 4,050 square feet. One is located on plot No. 408/2390/6388, and the other on plot No. 408/2390/6274. Additionally, a 1,250 square foot building was found in Similiguda, Koraput.

These structures, along with seven high-value plots—two in prime Bhubaneswar areas, four in Jagatsinghpur town, and one in Similiguda—are currently being measured and valued by the Vigilance Technical Wing. Officials estimate their worth to be in the crores, with potential for the total valuation to rise as assessments continue.

Movable assets seized include approximately 1 kg of gold jewellery and 250 grams of silver ornaments, cash amounting to Rs. 9,28,500, and an assortment of foreign currencies: three US dollars, two Indonesian Rupiah notes, four Macau Pataca, eight Thailand Baht, four Hong Kong dollars, six Vietnam Dong, and four Malaysian Ringgit. Bank and insurance deposits totalling Rs. 66.42 lakhs were also uncovered, including an investment of Rs. 1.66 lakhs in Bitcoins.

Vehicles impounded consist of one four-wheeler (TATA Harrier) and three two-wheelers, valued at around Rs. 28.75 lakhs. Household articles worth approximately Rs. 30.75 lakhs round out the list of findings.

The searches spanned Satapathy’s properties, including the two Bhubaneswar buildings, his parental home in village Bila, Mukundapur (Jagatsinghpur district), his government quarter and office room in Semiliguda under the Koraput Forest Division. Five specialised teams conducted simultaneous operations to ensure thorough coverage.

Satapathy is currently under examination to explain the source of these assets. Vigilance officials have indicated that further searches are in progress, and additional assets may be discovered, potentially increasing the overall valuation.
