In a shocking case of administrative negligence, 18 school-level wrestlers from Odisha — 10 boys and 8 girls — endured a humiliating train journey to and from the 69th National School Wrestling Championship in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.

To begin, viral videos captured the young athletes sitting on the floor near train toilets in unhygienic and freezing conditions. These images quickly sparked nationwide outrage and compelled the state government to order an immediate inquiry.

Next, officials confirmed that the contingent, accompanied by four teachers, departed Bhubaneswar on December 5 and returned on December 14. Only a few members had confirmed tickets, while the majority were forced into overcrowded general compartments. On both journeys, the athletes — many of them minors — sat near toilets, exposed to biting cold, foul odours, and constant passenger traffic.

Furthermore, Assistant Director Jyoti Prasad Parida admitted that only four players had confirmed berths, describing the situation as “mismanagement.” Parents voiced anguish, stressing that their children endured not only physical discomfort but also humiliation while representing the state at a national event.

Moreover, the incident drew sharp criticism on social media and from opposition leaders, who branded it a “national embarrassment.” National outlets such as NDTV and News18 amplified the outrage, intensifying calls for accountability.

In response, the School and Mass Education Department sought an explanation from the Director of Secondary Education and initiated a probe. Minister Nityananda Gond assured strict action against those responsible if lapses are confirmed. Officials also pledged to coordinate more effectively with Indian Railways to secure confirmed tickets and guarantee dignified travel for student athletes.
