Delhi Fog Triggers Flight Disruptions as Airlines Issue Travel Advisories

Dense fog and poor visibility across Delhi and large parts of North India on Thursday morning led to widespread flight disruptions, prompting major airlines to issue travel advisories for passengers.

Airlines including SpiceJet, Air India and IndiGo warned that low visibility conditions could impact departures, arrivals and connecting flights, particularly at Delhi and Chandigarh airports. Passengers have been advised to regularly check flight status before heading to the airport and allow additional travel time.

In a post on social media platform X, SpiceJet stated that dense fog in Delhi may affect all inbound and outbound flights, urging travellers to stay updated through the airline’s official website. Air India also issued an advisory, highlighting that poor visibility conditions over the next few days could disrupt operations at its primary hub in Delhi, as well as at several airports across northern and eastern India.

To reduce passenger inconvenience, Air India said it is offering round-the-clock support to help travellers make alternate arrangements. Under its ‘FogCare’ initiative, passengers booked on potentially delayed flights will receive advance alerts on their registered mobile numbers. The airline is also allowing eligible passengers to reschedule flights without additional charges or opt for a full refund.

IndiGo, meanwhile, reported disruptions due to low visibility in Chandigarh. The airline said that, as a safety measure, some flights have been cancelled throughout the day. Passengers were advised to check their flight status online and plan for longer travel times.

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) confirmed that Low Visibility Procedures (LVP) were in effect during the early hours of the day. Later, the airport announced that operations were being conducted under CAT III conditions, which allow aircraft to land in very low visibility but may still lead to delays.

“We are working closely with all stakeholders to minimise inconvenience to passengers,” the airport operator said in a statement.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), shallow to moderate fog is likely during morning hours on December 18, 20 and 23, while moderate to dense fog is expected on December 21 and 22. Flight disruptions have become increasingly common in recent days as thick smog continues to reduce visibility across the national capital.
