A temple priest in Mumbai’s Chembur area has been arrested after an idol of Goddess Kali was discovered dressed in attire resembling Mother Mary, prompting concerns among devotees and leading to a police investigation for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

Devotees Shocked After Idol Appears in Unusual Attire

The incident took place on Sunday at a Kali Mata temple in Chembur, where visitors were surprised to find the idol adorned in golden robes, a large embellished crown, and holding a child figure—similar to depictions of Mother Mary and baby Jesus.

A video of the idol, recorded inside the temple, circulated widely on social media, drawing public attention and leading devotees to alert local authorities.

Priest Claims ‘Divine Instruction’ in Dream

Police identified the priest as Ramesh, who told investigators that he dressed the idol in that manner because the goddess appeared in his dream and instructed him to “adorn her in the form of Mother Mary.”

Officials from the RCF Police Station confirmed that the video circulated online matched the idol’s appearance when officers inspected the shrine.

Case Registered Under BNS for Hurting Sentiments

The Chembur police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for allegedly hurting the religious feelings of a community.
The priest was arrested and produced before a local court, which remanded him to two days of police custody.

Police Investigating Possible Larger Motive

Authorities are examining whether the act was carried out solely by the priest or if others were involved. Officials said they are probing whether there was any organised intent behind the incident or if it was an isolated act based on the priest’s stated claim.

Further investigation is ongoing.
