On the occasion of Samvidhan Diwas (Constitution Day), Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a special letter to the nation, describing the Constitution as a “sacred document” that has shaped India’s democratic journey and guided its progress for decades.

Modi emphasised that every citizen’s actions must strengthen the Constitution and advance national goals, adding that the document empowered “a person like me, coming from a humble and economically disadvantaged background, to serve as the Head of the Government for over 24 years.”

PM Reflects on the Spirit of the Constitution

The Prime Minister said it is the collective responsibility of all Indians to fulfil the vision of the framers of the Constitution, noting that India’s social and economic development multiplies when people work with a sense of duty.

He also criticised the Opposition, saying the Constitution did not receive the respect it deserved on its 60th anniversary in 2010. To honour the milestone, he recalled organising the Samvidhan Gaurav Yatra in Gujarat, where the Constitution was ceremonially carried on an elephant in a symbolic tribute.

Honouring the Constituent Assembly and Key Leaders

Modi paid tribute to:

  • Dr Rajendra Prasad, President of the Constituent Assembly

  • Dr B.R. Ambedkar, who chaired the Drafting Committee

  • All members whose vision and foresight shaped modern India

He called Samvidhan Diwas a moment of “immense pride,” especially as 2025 marks the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda, both of whom made historic contributions to India.

Patel, Birsa Munda and National Milestones

Modi highlighted Sardar Patel’s leadership in unifying India and said his courage guided key constitutional decisions such as the abrogation of Article 370 and 35(A), ensuring full constitutional rights in Jammu & Kashmir.

He praised Birsa Munda’s enduring legacy, which continues to inspire India’s commitment to dignity, justice, and empowerment for tribal communities.

Modi also noted other significant anniversaries:

  • 150 years of Vande Mataram

  • 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, symbolising courage and compassion

The Primacy of Duties and the Road Ahead

Drawing attention to Article 51A, the Prime Minister said Fundamental Duties form the foundation for collective progress. He reiterated Mahatma Gandhi’s belief that rights naturally flow from well-performed duties.

Looking ahead to 2049, when India marks 100 years of adopting the Constitution, Modi said today’s decisions will shape future generations. He urged citizens to honour the Constitution through responsible citizenship, national pride, and wholehearted commitment to duty.

He concluded by emphasising the duty to vote, encouraging young people to participate actively in democracy:
“When we inspire our youth with a sense of responsibility, they remain committed to democratic values throughout their lives. This commitment builds a strong nation.”
