Nuapada witnessed an intense by-election on Tuesday with 83.45% voter turnout, sealing the fate of 11 candidates in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The contest drew unprecedented enthusiasm among voters, with participation surpassing two lakh people.
The battle featured a triangular fight between three major parties. BJP fielded Jay Dholakia, son of the late MLA Rajendra Dholakia. BJD nominated Snehangini Chhuria, while Congress put forward Ghasiram Majhi. All three leaders campaigned vigorously across Nuapada, Komna, and Khariar, drawing large crowds.
The Chief Electoral Officer confirmed that 358 polling stations were set up, including 47 sensitive and 8 highly sensitive booths. Polling parties reached the most sensitive booths by helicopter, ensuring smooth conduct.
Nuapada constituency has 2,53,624 registered voters, including 1,24,108 men, 1,29,495 women, 1,786 older citizens, 9,429 first-time voters, and 3,988 voters with disability. On polling day, 2,12,385 voters cast their ballots, with women outnumbering men in turnout.
The by-election turnout reflected a strong desire for development. Voters expressed determination to choose leaders who could bring progress to the region. The result, scheduled for November 14, will decide the future of Odisha’s three major political parties and could reshape the state’s political landscape.
Although 11 candidates contested, the outcome primarily hinges on the BJP, BJD, and Congress. Analysts believe the verdict will set the tone for Odisha’s upcoming political direction.
