Two minor tribal girls from Rangiam village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district were gang raped on October 22 while returning from a local jatra event.

The survivors, aged 13 and 14, were students of Class 8 and 9.

The girls had traveled with male friends on a two-wheeler to Madhuria village. On their way, five youths, including the main accused Raju, chased and intercepted them near a field. The attackers assaulted the boys, who managed to escape. Raju then took the girls to Tikpada canal and called his accomplices. All five allegedly raped the girls.

Local resident Kusum Tudu informed the victims’ families. One parent filed a police complaint on October 25. Acting swiftly, police registered a case and launched a search operation. They arrested Raju and two others named in the FIR. Authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining two suspects.

Betnoti SDPO is leading the investigation. Officials are examining the timeline and gathering evidence to ensure a watertight case. The incident has sparked outrage across Mayurbhanj, with community leaders demanding strict punishment.

This Mayurbhanj crime against minors highlights the urgent need for stronger safety measures in rural areas. Police have increased patrolling in Rasgovindpur block and urged residents to report suspicious activity.

The case has drawn attention to the vulnerability of tribal minors and the importance of timely intervention. Officials assured that justice will be delivered and support will be extended to the survivors.
