Hundreds of passengers planning to return home for Diwali were left stranded in Milan after Air India’s Delhi-bound flight was abruptly cancelled.

The flight, AI138, which was scheduled to carry 256 passengers and 10 crew members, was called off due to what the airline described as an “extended technical requirement.”

Air India Cites Safety Concerns

In an official statement, Air India confirmed that the flight from Milan to Delhi on October 17 had to be cancelled because of a technical snag in the aircraft. The airline said the decision was taken in the interest of passenger safety.

“Flight AI138 from Milan to Delhi on 17 October was cancelled due to an extended technical requirement on the aircraft scheduled to operate the flight, prioritising the safety of all passengers and crew,” Air India stated.

The cancellation disrupted the holiday plans of many travellers who were eager to reach India in time for Diwali celebrations on October 20.

Passengers Provided With Accommodation

Air India said all affected passengers were provided with hotel accommodations and meals, though some hotels were located farther from the airport due to limited availability.

“All affected passengers have been provided hotel accommodations; however, due to limited availability, arrangements were made outside the immediate vicinity of the airport,” the airline said in a follow-up statement on Saturday.

The airline also arranged alternate travel options for stranded passengers. One traveller, whose Schengen visa expires on October 20, was rebooked on another airline’s flight departing Milan on October 19 to ensure compliance with visa regulations.

Airline Issues Apology

Air India expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and reiterated its commitment to passenger safety.

“Air India continues to provide all necessary ground assistance, including meals, to all affected passengers. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and reaffirm our commitment to the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew,” the statement added.

What’s Next

The airline is working to ensure that all stranded passengers reach their destinations as soon as possible. Engineers have been dispatched to address the aircraft’s technical issue before resuming operations.
