The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been chosen as a mentor civic body under the Swachh Shehar Jodi programme to guide five urban local bodies (ULBs) in Odisha — Kendrapada, Deogarh, Bargarh, Pattamundai, and Joda.
Part of a nationwide initiative involving 75 mentor cities, the programme seeks to improve sanitation standards across India by sharing best practices, strengthening waste management systems, and supporting the development of waste processing infrastructure.
100-Day Time-Bound Plan
The programme will run for 100 days, with a focus on visible cleanliness, citizen participation, and outcome-oriented sanitation measures. It is also expected to positively influence Swachh Bharat survey rankings for both mentor and mentee cities.
Waste-to-Energy Project in Bhubaneswar
In a parallel development, the Odisha government has announced a waste-to-energy initiative to process 1,000–2,000 tonnes of waste daily from Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Jatni, and nearby municipalities.
Land has been earmarked at Palasuni for a plant that will include a waste-to-energy unit, a biogas composting facility, and a briquette/charcoal plant. The project is expected to generate up to 25 MW of energy, turning collected waste into a renewable energy source.
