Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan has defended his now-viral “gun-shot” celebration during the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 clash against India, stating that it had no political motive.
Farhan’s Defense at ICC Hearing
Following a complaint lodged by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the ICC summoned Farhan and pacer Haris Rauf for an official hearing over their “provocative on-field gestures.”
Farhan clarified that his act was simply a moment of joy:
“Such celebrations are quite common during weddings and other functions. Even Indian cricketers like Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni have done similar gestures before,”
the 29-year-old reportedly told the ICC panel.
The Controversial Celebration
The incident took place on September 21 in Dubai when Farhan brought up a crucial fifty against India. The right-hander raised his bat like a gun and mimicked firing shots – a gesture that sparked outrage among Indian fans and commentators, especially amid heightened India-Pakistan military tensions.
Pakistan Scrape Through to the Final
Farhan failed to make an impact in Pakistan’s final Super 4 clash against Bangladesh on September 25, falling cheaply for just four runs. Pakistan’s batting line-up once again struggled and could manage only 135/6.
However, their bowlers stepped up to secure a dramatic 11-run victory, with Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi picking three wickets apiece. Bangladesh were restricted to 124/9, allowing Pakistan to book their place in the final.
