Mahila Congress Assembly Siege

In a powerful show of solidarity against the escalating wave of violence against women across Odisha, the state unit of Mahila Congress has announced a large-scale protest, vowing to lay siege to the Odisha Legislative Assembly today. Thousands of women activists are expected to converge on the state capital, demanding immediate action from the government to ensure women’s safety.

State Mahila Congress President Minakshi Bahinipati, in a stirring video statement, highlighted the alarming surge in atrocities, declaring that “women in Odisha have become completely unsafe.” The protest is spearheaded in response to the brutal murder of Traffic Constable Shubhamitra Sahu, whose disappearance and subsequent killing have sent shockwaves through the state. Bahinipati emphasised that the siege is a direct call for justice in the Sahu case and broader measures to curb the “unreasonable rise” in crimes against women.

The Congress party has already taken concrete steps in the wake of the tragedy. A fact-finding committee comprising eight members, constituted by the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), visited the victim’s family home to extend support. The team also reached out to key authorities, including the Commissionerate Police (CP) office, the Commissioner’s office, Capital Police Station, and Traffic Police Station, to press for swift investigations and accountability.

In their demands, the Mahila Congress has called for comprehensive justice for Shubhamitra Sahu, a compensation of ₹50 lakh for her grieving family, and a government job for her brother to secure their future. “While those meant to protect us are turning into predators, our sisters and daughters live in fear,” Bahinipati said, underscoring the systemic failures that have emboldened perpetrators.

As women from all corners of the state rally under the Congress banner, today’s action signals a broader movement for gender justice. Party insiders predict a massive turnout, with preparations in full swing to ensure a peaceful yet resolute demonstration.
