India to Study Implications of Saudi Arabia–Pakistan Defence Pact: MEA

India has said it will carefully assess the implications of the newly signed Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, citing its impact on national security, regional stability, and global security dynamics.

MEA’s Response to Media Queries

Speaking at the weekly media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that the government had been aware of the development prior to the official signing of the pact.

“We have seen reports of the signing of a strategic mutual defence pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The Government was aware that this development, which formalises a long-standing arrangement between the two countries, had been under consideration,” Jaiswal stated.

He further added:

“We will study the implications of this development for our national security as well as for regional and global stability. The Government remains committed to protecting India’s national interests and ensuring comprehensive national security in all domains.”

Details of the Saudi-Pakistan Agreement

The pact was signed on Wednesday during Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit to Saudi Arabia at the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

According to a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency:

  • The agreement aims to enhance defence cooperation between Riyadh and Islamabad.

  • It commits both nations to view any attack on one country as an attack on both, thereby strengthening joint deterrence capabilities.

Geopolitical Context

The signing comes just days after an Israeli airstrike in Doha, which targeted Hamas leaders, heightening tensions across the Gulf region. The strike was criticised by the US as a unilateral move that could destabilise the region.

The pact also follows a brief but intense military confrontation between India and Pakistan earlier this year, triggered by the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, neutralising key terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Strategic Implications for India

Experts suggest that the defence pact could deepen Saudi-Pakistan military ties, potentially affecting the balance of power in South Asia and the Gulf region. India’s decision to “study the implications” indicates a cautious yet watchful approach, with emphasis on safeguarding national security interests while keeping a close eye on regional alliances.
