Authorities at the Hirakud Dam have opened four additional gates this morning, raising the total number of open gates to 20 due to continuous heavy rainfall and increased inflow from the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi River.
According to dam officials, 13 gates on the left side and 7 on the right are currently discharging water to manage the rising reservoir levels. The move comes as a precautionary step to prevent flooding and maintain structural safety amid a low-pressure system that has triggered widespread rainfall across the region.
Residents living near the riverbanks and in low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant and avoid venturing near the riverbed. Authorities have urged the public to take all necessary precautions to safeguard life and property.
The Hirakud Dam, one of Asia’s longest earthen dams, plays a critical role in flood control and irrigation in Odisha. With the monsoon intensifying, officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure timely action and public safety.
