Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a rousing welcome from the Indian diaspora as he began his two-day visit to Japan on Friday.

Indian community members gathered at a Tokyo hotel, waving the national flag and chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai” to greet the Prime Minister. Expressing gratitude, Modi said, “Deeply touched by the warmth and affection of the Indian community here in Tokyo. Their commitment to preserving our cultural roots while contributing meaningfully to Japanese society is truly commendable.”

In a unique gesture, several Japanese nationals also participated in the reception, performing Indian classical dances and donning traditional Rajasthani attire. A Japanese performer, who showcased the classical dance form Mohiniattam, said she was honoured to present it before the Prime Minister.

Later today, Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the annual India-Japan Summit, where Japan is expected to pledge doubling its investment target in India. Both leaders are set to discuss expanding cooperation in AI, semiconductors, and high-speed rail projects.

On Saturday, Modi and Ishiba are likely to travel to Sendai city on a bullet train to visit a semiconductor facility, underscoring the technological focus of the visit.
