A political storm is brewing after allegations surfaced that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother during the ongoing ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar.

The incident, reportedly captured in a viral video, has drawn fierce condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and allied leaders.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi joined the chorus of criticism, calling the remarks “highly unfortunate” and reflective of a “low mentality.” In a strongly worded post on X, Majhi described Modi’s mother as a “goddess-like figure” and accused Congress of abandoning cultural values.

The BJP has framed the incident as an affront to Indian traditions, where mothers are revered as divine. The party has demanded a public apology and filed police complaints in Darbhanga, where the alleged remarks were made.

The controversy threatens to derail the INDIA alliance’s messaging around voter rights and electoral reform. Gandhi’s 16-day yatra, launched from Sasaram on August 17, was intended to spotlight voter roll discrepancies and mobilise support. However, the focus has now shifted to personal attacks, with Congress yet to issue an official response.

Party insiders suggest the remarks may have been made by overzealous supporters and misrepresented by rivals. Meanwhile, social media remains divided, with reactions ranging from outrage to calls for restraint.

As the debate intensifies, the fallout from this controversy could reshape Bihar’s political narrative ahead of the assembly elections.
