In a sweeping gesture of cultural recognition, the Government of Odisha has declared August 29, 2025 (Friday) as a statewide public holiday on account of Nuakhai, the agrarian festival celebrated predominantly in Western Odisha.
The holiday applies to all government offices, magistrate courts, schools, colleges, universities, and teacher education institutions. This declaration is in addition to the holidays listed in the 2025 calendar year.
The decision, endorsed by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, reflects the state’s commitment to honouring regional traditions.
Nuakhai, observed with rituals, family gatherings, and cultural programs, holds deep emotional and social significance. The festival’s essence lies in offering the season’s first harvest to the deities and exchanging greetings known as “Nuakhai Juhar.”
To accommodate this holiday, September 13, 2025 (Second Saturday) will be observed as a working day across government institutions.
