A minor girl in Sambalpur district was allegedly gang-raped while going out for sanitation on Sunday evening.
The crime occurred between 6:30 PM and 7 PM in a village under the Jhankarpali Panchayat of the Jujumura block.
According to Sambalpur SP Mukesh Kumar Bhamu, five youths—three from the victim’s village and two from neighbouring Dudkapali—took advantage of the secluded location and committed the heinous act. The victim, a ninth-grade student, was alone at the time.
Following a complaint lodged by the family at Jujumura police station, an FIR was registered, and a late-night raid was conducted under the supervision of Rairakhol DSP. Three accused, including the prime suspect Sushant Mirdha (21), were arrested. Two minors among them were sent to a juvenile correctional facility, while two others remain absconding.
Police have identified all the accused and included their names in the FIR. The victim has undergone medical examination and is receiving treatment at Burla VIMSAR. A senior police officer confirmed that a high-level investigation is underway due to the sensitive nature of the case.
The district police have taken the matter seriously and assured that a charge sheet will be filed promptly.
