Several districts and states have announced school closures or extended winter vacations due to a sharp drop in temperatures and severe cold waves.
In Delhi, the minimum temperature fell to 7 degrees Celsius at 5:30 AM as fog covered the national capital. Here’s a list of places where authorities have shut down schools because of the extreme cold.
The Delhi government has declared a winter vacation for all government schools from January 1 to January 15, 2025. According to the official order, classes will resume on January 16, 2025.
In Noida, all schools are closed for grades up to 8 until further notice, while schools in Ghaziabad will remain shut until January 11. Lucknow has also closed schools until January 11, 2025, instructing them to conduct online sessions for grades 9 to 12. In Haryana, winter vacation is declared until January 15, with classes scheduled to resume on January 16, 2025.
The Bihar government has announced winter vacations for all government and private schools until January 11, 2025. Due to severe cold wave conditions, classes up to the 8th grade in Bihar’s Araria district have been suspended until January 12. However, classes for students in grades 9 to 12 will continue from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM. It is important to note that special classes and exams for pre-board and board students will proceed as scheduled.
The state government of Jharkhand has announced holidays for both government and private schools from January 7 to January 11, 2025, due to severe weather conditions.
Chandigarh has extended the winter break for schools in the Union Territory until January 11, 2025. Both government and private schools will remain closed until that date and will reopen on January 13, 2025.
In Tamil Nadu, schools will be closed from January 11 to January 19, 2025, to celebrate Pongal. Likewise, the Telangana government has announced the Sankranti holidays, with classes suspended from January 11 to January 17. Intermediate colleges in Telangana will remain closed until January 16 for the festival.
In Punjab, winter vacation has ended, and schools reopened on January 8, 2025. No further extension of the holiday or closures has been announced by the government.
