The Regional Meteorological Department in Bhubaneswar announced on Saturday that a well-defined low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a depression.
This system is currently situated over the west-central Bay of Bengal, close to the Andhra Pradesh coast, and is expected to bring rainfall to most parts of the state for at least the next 24 hours.
Manorama Mohanty, the Director of IMD Bhubaneswar, explained, “The wind has shifted to a south-easterly direction, bringing in significant moisture, which has led to the rain forecast. Interior Odisha can expect light to moderate rainfall, while coastal areas might experience heavy downpours.”
The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall warning for specific regions in the districts of Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, and Gajapati. Additionally, light to moderate rain is anticipated in several areas across Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jajpur, and Dhenkanal districts.
After 24 hours, the rainfall situation is expected to improve, though cloudy skies and gusty winds will likely continue in coastal and southern Odisha. The Meteorological Department also noted that there would be no significant changes in temperature over the next two days.
The IMD’s notification comes as numerous cities in Odisha, including the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, experienced rain-soaked roads along with intermittent light to moderate rainfall. The chill from the cold wave has diminished, with temperatures rising slightly in most areas, aligning with the IMD’s forecast from Wednesday.
