PM Modi US tariff meeting

India has not yet finalised whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York later this September.

Sources indicate that a decision is expected closer to the event, which opens on September 23 and concludes on September 29.

The provisional list of speakers includes India’s head of government scheduled for the morning of September 26. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently mentioned a possible meeting with Modi on the sidelines of the UNGA, fueling speculation about the Prime Minister’s visit.

However, officials caution that inclusion in the provisional list does not confirm attendance, as heads of state often change plans. At present, sources suggest a visit by Modi “appears very unlikely,” partly due to unresolved trade differences with the US, including a 25% reciprocal tariff imposed by former President Trump and additional penalties related to Russian oil purchases.

The situation remains fluid, and India’s final decision on the PM’s participation is expected closer to the UNGA session.
