Odisha is poised to transform its energy landscape, with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at the forefront of its clean energy revolution. In a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, the state outlined ambitious plans to integrate BESS into its renewable energy framework, signalling a bold step toward sustainability and inclusive growth.

The meeting focused on renewable energy production and storage, with a particular emphasis on BESS and solar-powered street lighting initiatives. Deputy CM Singh Deo underscored the urgency of adopting BESS, stating, “Odisha is moving toward Battery Energy Storage Systems as it is the need of the hour in our transition to renewable energy.” He highlighted that the state’s clean energy initiatives are not only decarbonising the power sector but also delivering widespread benefits, including enhanced energy access, job creation, reduced air pollution, improved public health, and stronger rural incomes. “Odisha’s clean energy revolution is as much about inclusive growth and social justice as it is about reducing emissions,” he added.

Principal Secretary Vishal Dev revealed plans for a pilot project to introduce solar-powered street lights, a move aimed at further promoting sustainable infrastructure. The meeting also featured a presentation by Bessium, a company specialising in battery storage systems, showcasing cutting-edge solutions to support Odisha’s energy goals.

Key attendees included MD Gridco Dr. Satyapriya Rath, MD OPGC Kedar Ranjan Pandu, MD OPTCL Saidutta Biplab Keshari Pradhan, Additional Secretary, Energy Mrs. Nivedita Mishra, Director, Municipal Corporation, Arindam Dakua, and other senior officials from the Energy Department, OPGC, and Gridco.

Odisha’s push for BESS aligns with global trends in energy storage, enabling the state to store excess renewable energy and ensure a stable power supply during peak demand. This initiative positions Odisha as a leader in India’s clean energy transition, fostering economic growth while addressing climate challenges.
