The Odisha Government has announced plans to establish 38 modern model mandis across 30 districts by next year, aiming to streamline agricultural trade and provide enhanced amenities for farmers.
The announcement was made on Friday by Cooperation Minister Pradeep Bal Samanta. Addressing the media, the minister stated that in case of larger districts, the possibility of setting up more than one mandi will also be considered.
These model mandis will feature a range of facilities, including potable water, toilets, rest sheds, electricity, shops, tiffin centres run by SHG women, and dedicated parking zones. A detailed presentation outlining the mandi design has already been submitted to the Chief Minister, and work will commence after formal approval.
Meanwhile, challenges persist in farmer registration for the Kharif paddy procurement season due to a shortage of iris scanner machines across 16 districts. This has led to inconvenience among farmers.
However, Food Supply and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra dismissed concerns, affirming that registration is progressing smoothly and has been simplified for better access.
According to departmental sources, while 979 iris scanners are required for e-KYC processes across 16 districts, procurement is underway to ensure timely distribution. These scanners are crucial for verifying identities and preventing agent-level malpractices.
Jajpur, Nabarangpur, Sundargarh, and Bhadrak are among the districts requiring the highest number of devices. Minister Patra assured that scanners will be supplied via Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) and Large Area Multi-Purpose Cooperative Societies (LAMPS) promptly.
Farmers facing any registration issues have been encouraged to contact designated helpline numbers for swift resolution.
