Chinese e-commerce platform AliExpress has removed a controversial doormat featuring an image of Lord Jagannath, following widespread backlash from devotees and strong condemnation across social media.
The platform confirmed the removal through a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “After reviewing the item based on reports received, we have removed it. We are monitoring listings to ensure product safety and respect.”
The doormat, which displayed Lord Jagannath’s image—a deeply revered deity in Odisha—was deemed highly offensive.
Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Prabhati Parida expressed her strong condemnation on social media platform X. She emphasized that Lord Jagannath is deeply intertwined with the soul and sentiments of every Odia, and demanded the immediate delisting of the product.
She also urged AliExpress to issue an apology to all devotees for this insensitive act.
The swift removal of the item has brought some relief to devotees, with many praising the role of media and the state’s quick response in protecting spiritual sentiments.
