SpaceX is set to launch the Starship Super Heavy on its eighth test flight this Friday from their Starbase facility in Boca Chica.
The highly anticipated mission will see the two-stage launch vehicle, consisting of the Super Heavy booster and the Starship spacecraft, take to the skies once more.
Both stages of the Starship Super Heavy are powered by Raptor engines, which utilize liquid methane and liquid oxygen. This propulsion system provides the necessary thrust for missions beyond Earth’s orbit. The Super Heavy booster, known for its capability to lift massive payloads, is deemed ideal for deploying large satellite constellations and constructing bases on the Moon and Mars.
The seventh test flight had a mixed outcome; while the launch was successful, the Starship spacecraft exploded upon reentering the atmosphere over the Caribbean. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk attributed the explosion to an oxygen/fuel leak that caused a pressure buildup, exceeding the venting capacity. In response, Musk announced plans to add fire suppression measures and increase vent areas to prevent similar incidents in future launches.
The explosion prompted safety measures, including route adjustments for airlines flying over the Gulf of Mexico and brief air traffic diversions by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Despite the setback, SpaceX successfully recovered the Super Heavy booster using its innovative mechanical “chopsticks.”
