Reports claiming that Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez applied for the Indian football team’s head coach position have been refuted by multiple international journalists, raising questions about the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and its statements.
Earlier, the AIFF suggested that Xavi’s application was rejected due to financial constraints, with national team director Subrata Paul telling TOI, “Yes, Xavi’s name was there. The application was emailed to the AIFF.” However, world-renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano dismissed these claims, stating on X (formerly Twitter):
“Despite recent reports, zero talks took place between Xavi Hernandez and Indian Federation.”
Spanish journalist Ferran Correas also backed this claim, stating that sources close to Xavi insist he never applied for the job and accused AIFF of using Xavi’s name to boost the profile of the role during their ongoing coach hunt.
