The Union government has extended President’s Rule in Manipur for another six months, effective from August 13, 2025. The decision was formalized after Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced a resolution in the Lok Sabha, which was subsequently approved.

The official notification reads: “That this House approves the continuance in force of the Proclamation dated February 13, 2025, in respect of Manipur, issued under Article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from August 13, 2025.”

President’s Rule was originally imposed on February 13, 2025, following the resignation of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, who stepped down amid political turmoil and mounting pressure from BJP MLAs of the Meitei community.

The extension comes even as Meitei and Naga MLAs of the ruling NDA continue to push for the restoration of an elected government in the state. The situation remains tense, with ongoing ethnic clashes and law-and-order concerns, such as the recent Kuki-Meitei tensions over farmland in Imphal East district.
